Sustainable Furniture: From the vernacular to the IT material

Bamboo has long been used in vernacular architecture and furniture making in tropical countries. Their availability, fast growth, and natural qualities such as its flexibility, tensile strength, and fire resistive nature make it ideal for cheaper alternatives for furniture and temporal housing.

Nowadays bamboo has been rising in popularity, various procedures are now being employed to improve the natural qualities of bamboo. Slowly the material known only for vernacular housing is now rising in popularity as the IT material hailed for its sustainable benefits and strength comparable or perhaps even greater than conventionally used materials. Gone are the attached words “alternative” or “temporal” to bamboo, for slowly it is creating its own name in the construction and furniture industry – in lieu of its strength and the various possibilities offered by this old but somehow new construction material.

More and more innovations exploring bamboo are being made popular and used in the industry of both furniture design and architecture. Although these materials may not be as cheap as you think, they still pose as great replacements for hardwood or sometimes even steel.
